Training your dog is part of responsible ownership. Whether it’s basic obedience or advanced training, dogs must be socialized and taught how to be good canine citizens. Training is also necessary to keeping your dog happy and safe. Check out these great dog training tips.
Dogs have the uncanny ability to have single-minded focus when something catches their attention. Dogs learn by repetition so with continued training, your dog will immediately focus on what you are saying.
You must be willing to invest the time required for practice if you want your training to be successful. It isn’t unusual to have to repeat a trick dozens of times before the dog understands. Use the command over and over again until the dog gets the hint.
Choose a set phrase for house training your dog. When it’s time for him to go outside to do his business, say “Elimination Device…Activate!” or whatever phrase you chose to call his attention to the task at hand.
When giving commands to your body, your tone and volume level should remain the same. This tone tells the dog that you mean business and that they need to obey. It will also help him distinguish between a disciplinary tone, which is sharper, and a commanding tone.
Be sure to keep your treats close by when you’re training your dog. It is important for the dog to realize when he exhibits the proper behavior in response to your commands. Doing so leaves no question as to whether a behavior is considered acceptable or strictly forbidden.
As you train the dog, patience is essential. This will reduce anger, stress and tension when you train your dog. Your dog wants to make you happy, but sometimes it just does not understand you.
Whenever the dog jumps upon you, grab its paws and give them a soft squeeze so they know it is not okay to jump on humans. As long as you gently squeeze their paws, you won’t cause harm to your dog. Instead, you’ll just give them an comfortable feeling. Eventually, they’ll quit jumping on other people because they’ll start associating jumping with this pinching.
When training your pet, see to it that you get its attention all the time. Try to use the dog’s name in the start of the command. Using their name will help to personalize your command. Dogs will hear there name and pay attention.
If your dog is accompanying you on a trip, be sure to bring along whatever your dog needs for sleeping, eating and eliminating. Things such as food and water bowls, paper toweling and waste bags are critical for a smooth trip. Don’t fret about slugging along the big bag of dog food as you can simply pick up more dog food at your destination.
Make training as fun as you can for your dog. Keep the sessions limited to 15 minutes or so to avoid the dog becoming disinterested and distracted. Reward your dog generously, when warranted. Give your dog plenty of praise and this will make him happy. This will make training and listening pleasurable for your dog.
A dog who has access to enough food and toys for entertainment is much less likely to dig through your trashcans. Always keep your trash free from bones and other items that may entice your dog. Be sure to crate your dog when you go out and/or leave your trash can empty when you are gone.
Always reinforce positive behavior in your dog. Punishing your dog whenever he or she does something wrong is not always necessary. Instead, just ensure you aren’t reinforcing bad behavior. If you rely solely on negative reinforcement, it is possible that your pet may become frightened and resentful of you. Positive reinforcement will ensure that your dog will want to do good things more often in order to receive treats and praise.
Hopefully, these tips can help both you and your dog enjoy your lives more. Training your dog well makes your dog more fun to have around and cause less stress. Regardless of if you decide to train your dog on your own or use a professional, it is key that you do train your dog to ensure a happy union with your dog.
