A lot of people who have pets find that they love them as much as some family members! However, having a puppy in the home is often a great deal of work. This new puppy has to be trained! Apply these ideas consistently, and you can have a perfectly trained dog.
Rewarding your dog generously and properly is essential in training your dog. Giving your dog treats at the right time and in the right amount is important. Unless you administer praise and treats as soon as the dog exhibits the desired behavior, he will not be able to connect the behavior to the treat.
A main focus of training is timing your sessions appropriately. Begin with shorter training sessions and gradually increase the time each day. You will see how long your training sessions should be before you lose your dog’s attention.
Pick a consistent phrase to use with your puppy while house training. Tell the dog a phrase, like “go potty!”, whenever you go outside to help your dog keep the goal of going outside in mind.
When you are training your dog, be mindful of the time spent in one session. Spending too much time just on one aspect of training will bore your dog and waste your efforts. Keep sessions to a minimum at first. Target 10 minute sessions for increased success.
If your dog leaps on you, hold his paws and squeeze them a little so he will know this is not acceptable. While this will not seriously hurt the animal, it is certainly unpleasant and therefore makes a powerful statement. They will stop doing this behavior since it will be associated with a negative feeling.
Make sure you are having fun when you are training your dog each day. Your dog will bond with you the more fun you have together, and this helps the dog give a positive response. Training can be enjoyable, but you should still make time just to play with your pet.
Training is a lifetime endeavor. A dog does not stop learning after puppyhood. Your dog will continue to be obedient if you use reinforcements. Continuing discipline with them will reduce the chances of bad behavior appearing.
Don’t give a puppy too much information and training at once, or you’ll wear him out. A puppy’s attention span is short and their energy is limited, so your sessions should be short and positive. Overdoing it could cause them to forget what was learned, and they may see the training as negative; thus, making sessions harder for you later.
To enforce good behavior when training your dog, remember to praise him regularly. Positive reinforcement, shown through your tone and attitude, lets your dog know he has done a good job. Do not reward undesirable behavior, because the dog will get mixed messages.
You should teach your dog how to lay down. This command is useful to build upon, or on its own in emergency situations. “Down” is the perfect command to keep dogs out of danger.
Consistency is one of the keys to successful dog training. A list of directives should be available to anyone who may give instructions to your dog at some time. Make sure everyone knows what to do in terms of rewarding the dog when it does well and not reinforcing poor behavior. A dog will get confused if the reward does not always come after a good deed.
Puppy power! You’re ready to start training today. Keep your patience strong, and give your dog positive reinforcement for the behaviors you want. These tips will not be mastered overnight, but you and your dog will soon get there.
