When you brought home your dog you were expecting Lassie, but sometimes it feels like you brought Cujo home instead. The good news is that, with just a bit of basic training, your dog can become better behaved within just a short amount of time.
When you are using a dog crate in your training, you need to help your dog get used to it as his home. When meal time comes, place the food bowl in the crate and keep the door open while the dog eats. This way that start to like their crate even more.
Be sure to keep your dog active and engaged a great deal of the time. Dogs become bored very easily. When dogs feel bored, they are much more stubborn when it comes to training. If your dog is fit and content, he will be much more likely to heed your instructions. Go for long walks and runs with your dog.
Avoid restraining two dogs too closely together. The chain from one dog could wrap around the second and the dogs could get hurt trying to get free. If a large dog becomes tangled with a smaller one they could wrap up to the point the airway of the latter is closed off and the dog would die.
Make sure that your dog’s crate is the right size for him if you are going to use it to train him. You should keep in mind that your dog will get bigger. You want a crate that will suit your dog right through to adulthood. The dog must have enough room to lie down and turn around without getting crowded.
Training your pet to roll over very easy. Just remember to have treats in hand. First, have the dog lay down. Then, use the treat to draw his head from one side to the other. He will naturally use his nose to follow the treat, thus rolling over his whole body. Upon seeing him roll over, issue the command. You can then repeat the command to the point where he rolls over without the added incentive of a treat. Put your frustration aside and he’ll be performing this trick all over the place in no time.
Choose a set phrase for house training your dog. Every time you take him outside, tell him “go potty,” (use whatever phrase you have chosen) and this will help him learn to focus and remember what he has gone outside to do.
If you want your do to be house trained, you must make sure that he follows a regular elimination and feeding schedule. This will help you know when you have to take your dog outside, before he ruins your carpet. A regular schedule will also give your dog a chance to learn how to exercise self-control, as he will know that a trip outside is eminent.
Many times dog owners are surprised to see they can easily train their dog on an everyday basis and promptly see the results. If your dog is exhibiting signs of bad behavior, use some of these training tips.
