Some people shy away from training their own dog for fear that it will be too hard. In many cases, this is because they aren’t familiar with all the options available for training purposes. You have to learn as much as you can about puppy training if you want it to be effective. Read through this article to learn many helpful training strategies and ideas.
There are many different approaches that can be used to crate train a new puppy. If your pet is nervous about the crate, consider putting a toy or treat inside to motivate them to go in. Once they know the treat is in the crate, you will have to hold them back to stop them from getting the bone because they’ll be so eager. Once they enter the crate, be sure to praise them to show that what they did was good.
It is easy to train a roll with treats. Firstly, have the dog lie down. Next, hold the treat close to the floor near its head, and bring it up over the dog’s head as you place it on the other side. Your dog is probably going to follow the treat in your hand with his nose, which means he will rollover his whole body. Each time he sways to one side, tell him to “roll over”. Keep doing this until the treat is no longer needed. Be patient if they don’t get it right away; they’ll get it soon enough!
You will be able to allow your dog to do more as it learns. It is important that you reach a balance between freedom and obedience in order to establish a satisfying relationship. Don’t give your dog too much free reign though.
Every time you speak a command, it should be with the same tone and loudness level. This lets them know you’re serious and that they must obey. The dog will also know the difference when you give them discipline as opposed to a command.
Don’t approach a strange dog too quickly. Hold our your hand and slowly move closer. This gives the dog a chance to become accustomed to your personal scent and shows him you mean no harm. As you become close to one another, fear will be diminished and opportunities to learn together will be increased.
If your dog jumps when you don’t want him to, gently squeeze his paws. If done lightly, it won’t hurt the dog, but it’ll make them uncomfortable. Eventually, they’ll quit jumping on other people because they’ll start associating jumping with this pinching.
Make a point to enjoy your time with your dog while you are training. Try and develop a bond with your dog by playing with him, it will only encourage the dog to want to please you more during training. Although training itself is fun, it is good to spend time each day just playing with your dog because you can.
Training Sessions
Your training sessions should be short. Dogs have short attention spans. Having short training sessions will prevent training becoming a chore for your dog. Allow you dog a break every fifteen and then resume training if desired.
Toilet training is as much your responsibility as theirs. Learn to recognize what your dog does when he needs to go out. Some clues to watch for are snuffling, whining and pacing. If you see your dog doing this, take action immediately. Immediately take your dog outside to the official restroom spot. Whenever your dog uses the restroom outside, reward him or her with lots of praise. Before long, he will be able to ask you to take him out.
Stay firm when you are training your dog. However, don’t be too demanding or cruel as you want to be a loving master. This approach helps to reinforce your relationship with the animal.
It is hoped that the knowledge you have acquired about training dogs will help you feel confident you can do a good job. Use these tips and continue learning as you embark on your lifelong journey of discovery with your dog.
